Procrastination is a terrible affliction...lol.

Let's recap the summer of fishing.
Tournament results since my last post on July 1st.
Hamilton Bassmasters - Long Point Bay = 3rd with my boater/partner Rob Campbell.
Hamilton Bassmasters - Hamilton Harbour evening club event individual = 4th.
Hamilton Bassmasters - Binbrook Conservation evening club event individual = 4th
Hamilton Bassmasters - Hamilton Harbour Fall Brawl = 4th with my boater/partner Rob Campbell.
Niagara Bassmasters - Make-A-Child-Smile Open = 23rd ish with my boater/partner Stan Pilarczyk
Niagara Outdoor Open with Joe Kubina......let's say 4th from LAST but at least we got to see a 8.91 lb smallmouth at the weigh-in as part of a 29.71 lb bag.....almost worth the entry fee...almost.

Part of joining the Hamilton Bassmasters was to meet other people to go fishing with and find some new water that I either didn't know about or wasn't comfortable hitting with my little beater tinney.

I finally fished Chippawa Creek after driving over it 300 plus times i the past 9 years with Rob Campbell and Kirs Wiita from the club. Lots and lots of fish but no real monsters.

I managed to get out for a day on the Upper Niagara river on both sides of the dotted line with Joe Kubina.
Had a great day. Caught 40 plus fish and fished some water I had never taken my small tinney on.

Did some fun fishing with my long time friend Marc Visser who just picked a rod up this year.

We got invited to ride shotgun in Rob Campbell's boat on the Upper River and Erie one fall day.

It started off well with a near 6 lb smallmouth on the first drift 3 or 4 minutes in.

We did the mouth of the river drift and went out to Waverly Shoal for a bit.

Grand total of 45 fish in the boat with 2 triple headers on one drift.

Beautiful view from blast off with the rumble and mist of Niagara Falls not too far away.

We had a tough early bit with a cold front for the morning in the main river but when we moved out in to the mouth at Lake Erie we quickly bagged a limit in the shallower, rocky areas were the sun had warmed the water up several degrees. No monsters to right home about and a 20 something place finish.

We did however clean house at the raffle table. Stainless Steel microwave, Craftsman gas leaf-blower, $170 rod/reel combo, tackle package, Fishbum gear.

Another great day of fishing and shooting the breeze with another great guy I met through the Hamilton Bassmasters club.

On to the single best fishing day I've had in the past 20 years.

Hamilton Bassmasters fall Hamilton Harbour joint event.

I fished with my good buddy Rob Campbell in his Stratos. We watched everybody blast off and head to the far reaches of the harbour while we puttered through the wakes to the second point just out side the boat launch channel.

I knew we could get a limit off of it in the wind.

First pass was a bust and Rob looked at me like "dude, I thought you said this was THE spot?!?"

I adjusted the pattern and went right up on the rocks on the shore and slowly bounced my Strike King Sexy Shad 5 series off the rock and down the ledge between weed clumps....bam! 15 fish in less than an hour with a 4+ as the anchor for the bag.

We tried a few spots Rob had seen on Google maps and I managed a decent 3lbr off of LaSalle Parks break-wall.

We ended up with over 30+ largemouth for the day and a 14.62 lb bag for 4th but only 0.2 lbs out of second.

Twin 5.21 lb fish tied and split big fish for the day.

I'll stop here and do a second part to the catch up posting on the weekend.

Thanks for taking the time for to stop by and read of my ramblings.

It was super windy so it made it the only place to get out unless you wanted to be in white caps elsewhere.
Tried several marked spots of the gps with no luck on the drop shot, spinnerbaits, crankbaits or jerk baits.
Quinten caught a 12" smallmouth on a LiveTarget perch crankbait but not what we'd hoped for 2 hours in.
Wind picked up even more and we were going to bail then we saw a spot where the shore line out to about 75 feet was protected by a rise and a line of trees so we decided to give it a couple of drifts before packing it in.
Good idea!
First drift I popped my biggest smallmouth this season (well that got in the boat anyway) on the Xzone mini slammer #309.

A couple of more drifts produced 2 more and a 3rd spit the hook with a big time aerial show.

Quinten couldn't get them to hit his drop shot even though we were fishing 4 feet apart on either side of the boat.

Tried the deep diving SKL shad crankbaits with a ton of followers and dropped the slammer on top of them but they all of a sudden had lock jaw.

All in all a decent afternoon with my buddy out fishing on a sunny friday afternoon.

Cheers,

It has now replaced the childhood anticipation of Christmas eve to now as an adult Bass Opener eve.

Hit the Upper Niagara river with my buddy Marc first thing Saturday.
Beauty day, light breeze with a few clouds and not too hot.

Didn't set the world on fire by any means with only 9 fish in the boat but I've had worse days.

I hit the first 2 of the day on a Xzone mini slammer 309 and a Strike King series 5 sexy shad
crankbait.

Once we found the right drift location we had a lot of short strikes grabbing only the tail.

It took about an hour or so and Marc finally broke his skunk streak of a couple of outings without a fish.

Just after noon the pleasure boat traffic picked up big time and some of them didn't give a crap we were fishing and only in a 14' 6" tinny and blasted by with big wakes.

We stuck it out for a while but after a couple of bigger wakes splashing in the boat we decided to call it a day.

Hope the weather and wind co-operate from here on in so we can get out 1 or 2 evenings after work local and either Saturday or Sunday to a destination spot.

Cheers!

7 Teams from the Hamilton Bassmasters and Niagara.
8 Teams from the CBAF Golden Horseshoe Anglers.

Friendly joint tournament with bragging rights on the line between B.A.S.S. and CBAF.

The blast off was awesome, 15 boats putting the pedal to the wood.
I had a big ole shit eatin' grin on as John matted his 150hp Merc and we hit 50mph in no time.
That was the fastest I'd ever been in a boat and the guys with the big 250's were pulling away in no time.

Met a great guy, John Scholl from the Niagara Bassmasters was my boater partner.
Beauty Triton boat, super knowledgeable, patient with a rookie noob in his boat.
Thanks for showing me the ropes and having me on your boat John!!!

Boated a quick limit of 5 on the tube (John) and dropshot (me) in the first hour and a half.

Rookie mistake #1: make sure you leave the bail open if you're leaving your drop-shot down while netting your partners fish.....big smallie hit it and it flew off the back deck to the bottom.
One Quantum rod/Shimano reel combo joins so many others at the bottom of Erie...or at least that's what John told me to make me don't feel like an idiot.

Moved around looking for some quality to cull out our smaller fish.

Hit a massive shore line of boulders and rock and 3 rd cast in burning a Strike King spinnerbait slammed the kicker we needed to put us in contention.
It whacked it about 50 yards back and I got a little too excited and leaned on it a bit, first big jump and the spinnerbait came flying back at us.
John figured I'd just lost a 5+ lb'r......I felt sick.

We moved out deeper to some weight points John had, landed a few more that culled out the smallest in the live-well.

Wind changed and started to blow on shore, we headed back in to work the transition between the sand and rock.
John stuck with the tube on the drop off and I was covering the huge rock flat towards shore.

I saw a chocolate brown smallie close to the boat and yelled for John to throw the tube behind the boat, bang it smoked it. Good fish over 3 lbs, culled out the smallest 2.8 lb'r.

We hit 6 or 7 over a 200 yard line but not the big one we needed to replace the one I lost.

2:29pm hit, time to blast back to the weigh in for 3pm.

We weighed in 15.69 lbs for a 6th place finish in club points.
With their bass season opening a week earlier than ours we will be looking for that winning sack a week before I originally planned.

I will be a co-angler in John Scholl's boat out of the Niagara area.

This will the second 2012 scheduled tourney for the Hamilton Bassmasters club with a bonus attached...we square off against the CBAF Golden Horseshoe Anglers for bragging rights.

I have 6 rods already rigged, I've tried to condense my tackle down to a respectable size but that is not as easy as I thought.
You never know what the bite will be so you have to be prepared.
-2 drop shot / tube rods.
-1 crank bait rod.
-1 spinner bait rod.
-1 jerk bait / top water rod.
-1 flipping stick.

The weather will determine a lot and with the Upper Niagara available if it's too rough/windy on the lake then we'd better be ready for some largemouth on the river too.

I hope to be posting pictures of our winning sack of hawgs tomorrow, boasting of our team winning the bragging rights until next year....we'll see what happens on the water tomorrow.

Cheers
The turn out was great, 38 vendors/table and well over 230+ visitors.
There was a substantial line up waiting for the doors to open at 9am sharp.
Soon as the door's opened, it was ON!

The bargains were flying, haggling abounded and almost everybody left happy with either cash in their pockets (vendors) or a bag of good deals (visitors).

Everybody did a great job from organising the event to advertising and promoting and setup and breakdown and everything in between.

The club raised some good money towards our conservation efforts and especially for the kids/youth derby planned for Christie Lake Conservation Area in July.

I managed to sell 70% of what I took and only spent 10 bucks....it was hard but my will power held.
My table was pretty empty by the time Jason got around to taking pictures:
Launched out of Crystal Beach and headed for the "flotilla" of boats on the horizon.
We'd heard it was "ON" all week and hoped the blue bird sky's and fairly choppy conditions weren't going to turn them off the day we can get out.
After watching every boat around us yank up perch cast after cast and not getting anything we asked a fellow fisher what the heck we were doing wrong.
He showed us how small a minnow they were biting on and realising that 75% of the minnows we had were too big.
We decided to go about 250 yards further west to the second big flotilla of boats and start fresh.
We down sized minnows and I cut some Berkley power baits down to size to try and conserve minnows.
5 minutes in the new spot and I had the first 2 in the boat, double header on my line!

We landed about 16 including some jumbos with the biggest at 13-1/2".
Quinten had an absolute brute on and in the excitement horsed it up from 63' of water too hard and straightened out the fine wire hook on his pickerel ring losing it just deep enough that we couldn't see how big it really was....damn.
We learned quite a bit talking with other boaters in the crowded area.
-go with 6-8lb braid (we were running floruo).
-super light action rods are a must for the light bite.
-come with at least 150 minnows between 1" and 2" with some larger just in case the bite changes.

All in all a decent day, first "raccoon" tan of the year courtesy of the bright sun and SKL sunglasses.

The 16 fish actually filleted up in to a nice fish fry when we got back.

Hoping the winds stay down and we get another shot at them next weekend.Scottyb1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/05925980943590515500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4703274676703868227.post-63624752464151235072012-03-24T10:10:00.002-07:002012-03-24T10:10:51.233-07:00Hamilton Bassmasters 2nd annual spring fishing swap meet.

Scottyb1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/05925980943590515500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4703274676703868227.post-24282162867388489412012-02-03T14:04:00.000-08:002012-02-03T14:04:07.832-08:00Saturday a-m going fishing!Saw some pictures from Denis at Fishin Niagara of some fat Laker's,Rainbow's and Walleye caught today on the Upper Niagara river.

It's inspired me to shake off this flu bug I've had all week to get out fishing in the a-m!

He says the jig bite is on so I'm loading up on jig heads, grubs, slammers and swammers from Xzone with the hopes of some big Walleye or a nice Laker on the end of my line tomorrow. Fall back plan will be the ultra light for some perch.

Going to sort tackle and rig rods for an early night to hit the road and be down there before the day break.

Fingers crossed I'll have some pictures to share tomorrow from a successful outing.

Cheers
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Between Christmas, the business, the weather and some family health issues fishing has been a distant 5th on the priority list. Now some of that is behind us I can get down to prepping for '12.

I had spent a few nights sorting through my 18 or so Plano tackle trays checking what needs to be replaced, added or removed for sale at the swap meet.
I had compiled a list of "wants" and set about scouring eBay and on line retailers to shop for the best deal.

Most of you know how the "self" sponsoring can get expensive quick so I'm a cheap prick and will wait on that right deal.
I managed to find some good deals either on sale or best pricing at a couple of small on line retailers.
www.hooksettersupply.com had great deals on Owner Twist-lock hooks, Strike King baby rage craws and best price on the Owner/Cultiva Zip'n-Ziggy top water baits off my list and www.eTackle.ca had a good deal on the new Live Target brown and rainbow trout crank baits and Xzone Swammers.
I even managed to get a few packages of the new VMC Spinshot dropshot hooks at www.lebaron.ca. They didn't have the most popular size because of back orders but will stop by tomorrow on my weekly run in to Toronto to see if they are in.

EBay provided some of the best deals. Strike King Rage craws and Rodents in colours most local shops won't stock and cheaper too.
Mop jigs, spinner baits, crank baits and tungsten bullet weights were bought at 50% savings over some local shops.

You have to sit on the deals and don't get wrapped up in the bidding frenzy and you will get deals. Don't think you HAVE to win that particular auction, wait and let others over pay and wait until the right deal presents itself then pounce.
One of my biggest secrets on eBay is people can't spell! It's right there on the package but they still butcher the brand names and not many people search for stuff with mis-spellings except me...and now you.
Best deal so far is 11 Kopper's Live Target crawfish crank baits @ $2.20 cdn each with shipping included...just because they seller couldn't do a simple thing like copy the name off the package correctly. There was only me and one other guy bidding and I won with a last second (6 actually) bid they other guy couldn't respond to quick enough.

Second best deal was for 90 3/8oz Tungsten, insert free bullet weights @ $0.66 each.
I have 2 others guys buying in to the deal with each of us landing 30 each for $20.00.
Most stores sell a 3 pack anywhere from $6 to $7 bucks.
Big savings on a consumable item!

I am now down to a few small items and line to buy.

I will wait until we are closer to Bass season before dropping the big dollars on 3 new St.Croix rods for my Flip'n Pitch set ups and top water specific set up.

Thanks for taking the time to read my entry!

Hoping for a few hours out tomorrow afternoon for some pike down at the ice free harbour.
Hope to have a picture or two of some pike to post!

Cheers,
Winter is long here, hope I don't get cabin fever and start flippin' a Strike King Rodent at it mid winter!....HA!
The new baits not only change colour when retrieved through the different thermal zones of the water column but also react to UV light.
I hope to get my hands on some soon. The first generation baits (both hard and soft) worked well and served as an excellent test bed for this 2nd generation.
Orders have started to ship world wide through distributors established at iCast 2011.

Here's a peak at one of the baits I'm excited to fish in 2012.

With the belly activating from yellow to blood red when retrieved thru a colder thermal layer, this bait is going to provoke strikes!

2012 is going to be awesome!

Looks like they're clearing shelf space for 2012 models maybe.
Trying to find some big Pike roaming around in the Harbour with no luck.

Time to pack it in for another season. Ice over won't be too far off anyway.

Going to pull all my reels off rods, loosen off all the drags and clean and service.

Ordered a big spray jug of Ardent Reel Clean today, will use it to hose off all of the crud and grime build up before oiling and greasing everything up before they're put to bed for the winter.

Time to bring everything back down to the man cave area and sort thru my 15 or so tackle trays to see what needs replacing, sharpening and repair.

It's going to be a long winter.

I may take another crack at ice fishing but it isn't even close to the same and open water casting plus you freeze you A$$ off.

Cheers

Let's just say the weather was "fresh". NW winds and wet snow made for a cold morning.

First cast snagged my new-out-of the-package SKL Series 3 Sexy Shad crankbait in the rocks..gone.

Retied a series 5 and on the second cast hooked in to a 30" (guesstimated size) Northern Pike. It put up a good fight and when I got it close to shore I noticed a big chomp mark on it's back from either a Muskie or a bigger Pike. It looked like a fresh wound too. This fish was angry and no matter how I tried to grab it and flipped out so I took a quick pic in the water and with a quick twist of my pliers it was off to be caught another day.

I am seriously thinking of going back saturday a-m with my muskie set up and chuck big baits to see if the pikes attacker is still roaming the area.

After that fish I managed to loose another SKL crankbait and one Rapala and with the winds picking up, the snow coming down sideways and frozen fingers I decided to bail.

At least I got out and didn't get skunked but it would have been nice to land one last bass; the last saturday in June 2012 is a long way off.

Cheers

Anyway, bass season is about to close in most areas close to me in Ontario tomorrow...boo!

I will suit up in my warm gear and rain suit over top and at least attempt to make a few casts to mark the dark day we fisherman dread as soon as the season opens on that glorious last Saturday in June.

With rain, wind and even wet snow a possibility it may be useless but I at least have to try.

It'll be time to remove all my reels from their rods, clean and service them and put them away for a long winters nap.
I'll have plenty on cold winter nights and weekends to sort thru my tackle and make a list of items to start procuring for next season.
At least we have shows like Extreme Angler TV, Facts of Fishing, The Next Bite, Getting School'd etc to watch and learn from throughout the winter to "easy the pain" until next spring.

Let's see if there is at least one more Bass hungry tomorrow to finish the season off.

Wind played havoc in any type of boat control, spent more time trying to stay on spots than fishing it seemed.
We hit several spots and tossed every type of bait imaginable at them with no success....not even a sniff.

Marked a number of fish both suspending and on the bottom with the Lowrance Mark 5x-DSI.

After getting blow in to the rocks a few times and whacking the prop of the MinnKota hard we made the call to head back to the launch and trailer the boat before we did real damage.

Looks like the last time out for the boat this season, weather forecast looks like it's going to drop off next week with 5'c temps during the day and minuses at night with snow.

Going to try some night shore fishing at Port Maitland tonight, talked with a couple of other fisherman at Fishing World and Canadian Tire both claiming the night bite is on.

It can't be any worse than yesterday can it?

Cheers,

Reloaded on a few Strike King XD Sexy Shads and Live Target Golden Shiners.

I am hoping the next few days as it warms up and the sun beats on the shore line rocks it will have the bass sitting on the edge of the 2 spots that have produced last week.

If not I'll hit a few spots I've found on my GPS chart and try for some smallmouth dropshoting Xzone Slammers.

It will be the last time out for my boat before it gets winterized and put to sleep for winter.

Hoping to follow this post up with some pictures and a story of success Friday and Saturday.Scottyb1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/05925980943590515500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4703274676703868227.post-88876458795991658952011-11-20T07:29:00.000-08:002011-11-20T07:29:27.181-08:00tough outing on Saturday.Hit the local harbour here in Hamilton yesterday.
It has been producing some respectable bass over the last two weeks.
Super windy, very hard to control where I was casting and it cost me 2 SKL sexy shad deep divers and 1 LiveTarget deep diving perch bait....expensive outing.
Tried several spots but chalked up a skunk on the board.
Looks like some decent weather later in the week, hope to get the boat out one last time and another crack at the big largemouth and smallmouth I know are in the harbour before the season closes on Nov 30th.

Just a quick report, off to get the house ready for my son Brodie's 13th birthday party today.

Cheers

I'm a 40 year old guy from Hamilton, Ontario.
I was born here, my kids (2) were born here and in the same hospital as me.
I was always an avid fisherman right up until my Dad passed in '88 when I was 17 and it lost it's shine since my fishing partner who taught me everything was gone.
Picked up a rod once or twice a year over the next 15 years but nothing serious.
Then a few years back I ran in to an old high school buddy who fished regularly and went out with him in his beat up old aluminium boat, had some success, caught the fishing bug all over again.

Now I have accumulated a pile of tackle, several rod and reel combos and even bought that beat up old boat off of him for my self.
I watch Extreme Angler TV, The Facts of Fishing, Lunkerville, Lindners Angling Edge, Getting School'd with JP DeRose and The Next Bite on the WFN Network. All of these shows teach you what to use, how to use it and where to fish it. Unlike the old shows that pulled one huge fish out of the water after the other but never explained HOW or on WHAT they actually used to do it.

I guess a combination of meeting up with my old buddy Quinten and getting hooked (bad pun) on these shows has brought me back to fishing, getting out side and learning.....I really missed it and still miss my old fishing partner, my Dad.Scottyb1971http://www.blogger.com/profile/05925980943590515500noreply@blogger.com0
